So the ‘news’ reported recently that there are more Americans in prison than any other nation in the world and that the ratio of People in prison far exceeds even China’s population to prison mix.

This, to me, is not a surprise, it is sad though. Especially when you see the numbers broken down by race and gender you see some truly horrific numbers! However, there is something else NOT in this story; the reason why this is. I believe that as the MOST ‘free’ country in the world is also the direct reason why our prisons are so full. ‘Freedom’ to do whatever you want is a guarantee written in our Constitution, RESPONSIBILITY to use that freedom is not written there. So here we are, in the ‘freest’ country in the world BUT because of said freedoms, we are lacking in the responsibility to truly enjoy those freedoms. This is what made this story the saddest to me. This is just more proof that Americans, while we all say we do, have not proven we deserve to have the responsibility of freedom. When you look at the family structure in the past two decades versus the previous decades, you see more children being born out of wedlock (which is not necessarily a ‘bad’ thing, but read on), more ‘deadbeat’ dads and moms, more children having children, and an all around angst within the younger generation as they see their own problems grow and grow.

Actually, what is scariest is the lack of our younger, voting aged citizens to actually get out and vote. While we do see more of that population talking about what needs to be done and who needs to do it, we don’t see that reflected in the polls as those same people are oddly absent. If ANYONE wants a change, this country has a very distinct and tried and true way to do it; VOTE. Now I am not saying that one persons vote will make a difference, but I AM saying one person NOT voting will definitely not make a difference.

I have written these words to illustrate how I am feeling about the state of our country. But don’t read into my words as I am trying to support on political party over another as time and experience has taught me there is not a hairs breadth difference between the Republican party and the Democrat party, what I am saying is we ALL have a responsibility to KEEP our nation free, even though it means keeping our leaders to their words and keeping each and every one of us RESPONSIBLE for what we do in every facet of our lives. BEING free and STAYING free both are only held together with the glue of responsibility and without that glue, the whole thing falls apart at the slightest touch.

As I also posted this elsewhere, I thought I would share what others had to say about this -

I also blame all the touchy feely psychritrists types. You stole something? You must be a kleptomaniac, its not your fault. You killed your baby? You have post partum depression, not your fault!
You killed a family while drunk driving? You’re an alcoholic, its a disease and not your fault. We live in a time where no one is responsible for their actions because we’ve allowed the shrinks and lawyers to manipulate us into believing our actions are beyond our control! You’re an alcholic because you choose to be, you steal because you choose to, and if you’re depressed stay the hell away from your friggin’ baby! Instead of working to help these people with thier problems we stick a pill in them and hope for the best, well guess what folks it ain’t working!

We don’t supervise out kids then wonder how they get pregnant, absitence programs are joke! Our young men don’t take care of their offspring cause his parents make every excuse for him not to! Parents are not parents anymore, they’re friends!

you hit the nail on the head rkinne01. until people are held responsible for their actions things won’t get better. when i was a kid if you did something wrong you were punished. now they “talk” to them and try to “fix” the problem. a kid steals a car and knows that if he gets caught he will be back on the street in hours while his parents talk about sueing because their poor baby was handcuffed.
if these same kids spent a week or more in jail they might think twice before doing it again. also i also think part of the problem comes from giving the kid everything that they want. then they think that the world owes them. most of the kids i see are all about “me” they don’t care or think about anyone else. which brings us to voting. idiots like that don’t even think about it. why should they? it’s not “their problem”. i love this country but we have some major problems that need to be fixed and it won’t be done but just one party. it will take both working together. fat chance right?
