Virgin Galactic has huge wads of cash and NASA has lots of research chops, so the two plan to combine those strengths to develop this hypersonic plane that could go Mach 5, taking you from New York to LA in about 45 minutes. This kind of point-to-point speed is nothing new for the U.S. space agency, which has already tested a scramjet that can go twice that fast, hitting 7000-mph. The idea here is to make this super speed more financially feasible, opening it up to you and me.

The proposed space plane will be able to reach 3500-mph by flying up to 95,000 feet and higher, where there's very little air to slow it down. What, is this like that spacecraft we mentioned earlier that uses magnetic fields to move? Nope. This scramjet technology, which NASA has already proven to work with two test flights, compresses air into the plane's engine by using the shock waves developed by such intense speed. Once the plane gets up to supersonic speeds, this scramjet technology takes over, and it requires no moving parts.

How do we sign up?

While Virgin Galactic has plans to take tourists into space in 2009 on SpaceShipTwo for $200K a pop, that's just the first step in getting people accustomed to flying at such lofty altitudes. That'll prepare them for Virgin's true goal: quick, point-to-point, regularly scheduled flights aboard these hypersonic craft. Fasten your seatbelts, it's going to be a hell of a ride.

I have a friend of a friend that worked for Virgin Galactic that developed SpaceShipOne. His girlfriend used to work in this Company too... And when they married, do you know what the Company offered them as a wedding gift ??? A FREE ticket for traveling in the SpaceShipOne (or Two maybe) . I don't know if they accepted that gift but if I was them, I would prefer having the 200K dollars in my pocket than risking my life !!!

And yes, some Europeans are developing a spaceplane too.
Do you know that Jean-Paul Haigneré, a French astronaut, has "launched" a European spaceplane project for suborbital flights ? I think it's good that European private partners develop their own spaceplane project... Maybe international competitition will down the price of those tickets.. lol

To promote this european spaceplace private project, there is the Student Aerospace Challenge, a challenge for students in every field of studies (physics, business, managment, chemistry, law etc)... I have got my own team involved in this Challenge. We work on the legal issues of this project. Well, I can't tell you which particular issues I am working on... since it IS a challenge I don't take the risk of being read by a competitor

Here is the link of the official site of the Student Aerospace Challenge :
http://www.studentaerospacechallenge.eu/

So yeah you can tell I am supporting the competitor's of NASA/Virgin Galactic. Anyway, I hope my team will win the Challenge !

Good luck with your project, Ariane.

And yes, you never know who is reading these pages. Victoria found that out the hard way when one of her sisters read the board and found out that Victoria has cancer. Victoria had not told her family yet.

Well, I did tell Victoria that could happen, but she didn't think it would.

Hello Merial, in case you are reading this.

Ouch !!! Yes, you never know who is reading the pages. We seem to believe that there is so many contents and pages so we don't need to protect ourself and hide, if necessary, our identity.

I have a funny story about this. Last year, my classmate and also good friend, Thomas, wrote a master dissertation about African and Carabean countries. While doing his research on the Internet, he felt on a site about the election of Miss Benin (Benin IS an African country)... And do you know who is this girl ??? Simply the sister of another classmate. His name was also mentionned in the Internet site, that "Mister XX was very proud of his sister"... LOOOL !!! Of course, this classmate did not tell us that his sister was a Miss... So Thomas sent by email this site's adress to every other classmates...
What a coincidence anyway, just imagine that !
