Did anyone else catch the first episode of Torchwood?

It’s on the Saturday schedule on BBC America at 9 PM (my local time).

I like it so far. I thought the first episode was well done... however, the potential for this show, over time, to get too dark for my taste is great. I do hope that Torchwood will not be all dark all the time and sink ever deeper into the pit of excessive morbidity. There is already way too much of that kind of thing in today’s sci-fi as it is.

Anyway, for me, Torchwood’s premier episode was pretty good. Time and a few more episodes will tell if I stay tuned though.

Yes, I caught this show.  Interesting idea.  Instead of traveling the universe, the universe comes to them.  I like the way they found their new recruit and incorporated her into the series.  And it was good to see Captain Jack again.  This show has potential!

I agree, this show has great potential, let us hope that the SciFi network doesn't pick this one up!

Perhaps there is a reason EVERYONE doesn’t have BBC America.  I guess I never really paid attention that much before because there were only occasional shows that I watched.  So now I’m thinking they must be on a higher tier that not everyone gets.  I’ve recently read about the sexual content of British television and how they are more open to it than American television.  Plus being on a British broadcast, a few words slip through that wouldn’t escape the censors of, shall we say, lower tiered channels.  That being said, this last episode of Torchwood was a little reminiscent of the movie Species.  Not near as gory and graphic mind you, but with the same needs per say.

I find it amusing that I’m dancing around the content of this episode.  And I don’t think it’s because of what I saw in the episode (I see stuff deeper than this in many other programs) but more so because of where I’m talking about it.

We have this preconceived notion that Brits are stuffy and perhaps even prudish but we just haven’t been watching their television programs!  Mostly I find their approach refreshing and honest.  British humor is definitely different than American humor and perhaps for some it’s an acquired taste.

On another note, I just discovered that “Torchwood” is an anagram of “Dr Who”.  How clever.  Captain Jack is an ageless omnisexual time agent who leads a Cardiff-based team, a secret task force that deals with alien encounters.  Creators of Torchwood say that viewers will either be offended or titillated by the show.

I agree that Torchwood is definitely spicier than Doctor Who.

I have known for years that the British have less sexual hang-ups than Americans do... but to see this first hand... is interesting.

I seem to recall talking with someone very recently about how refreshing British humor is. They are far better at dealing with their human nature, unlike Americans who seem to spend a lot of time attempting to suppress their human nature... and everyone else's.

As for this, the second episode of Torchwood, it reminded me of an Outer Limits episode I seen a few years back. In fact, you might call it a rip-off of that episode of Outer Limits because the story was so similar. Species was a different animal altogether… but it did have that lust for sex element too.

I seen a special that said the second episode of Torchwood was filmed largely before the first one was. This might explain why the first episode to show was better... in my opinion. I am looking forward to seeing how much better this show can get... and hoping that it does get better or at least stays as interesting as it is now.

If you have Comcast “On Demand” they are still showing the first three episodes.

Yeah, Comcast service is very much overpriced but at least there are some perks to having a digital package.

I wasn't able to tape (yes, tape with a VCR) the first two episodes because I didn't have my VCR/DVD combo hooked up yet.  Then the afternoon before the third episode I happened to catch both episodes, back to back.  So BBC America is good about rerunning the episodes too.  Maybe it would be a good time to visit a friend with BBC America!

I was not expecting that.  It was weird.  But were they aliens?

Nope, and that's the really scary part. They were fully human... and totally demented.

I did not like this episode. If I want to watch horror then I will look for it. I would rather not get slapped in the face with it when I am watching sci-fi.

I didn't care much for this episode either.  It left a bad taste in my mouth.  Oops, my bad.
