Your alarm goes off, you hit the snooze and sleep for another 10 minutes.

He stays up for days on end.
_________________________

You take a warm shower to help you wake up.

He goes days or weeks without running water.
__________________________

You complain of a "headache", and call in sick.

He gets shot at as others are hit, and keeps moving forward.
__________________________

You put on your anti war/don't support the troops shirt, and go meet up with your friends.

He still fights for your right to wear that shirt.
__________________________

You make sure you're cell phone is in your pocket.

He clutches the cross hanging on his chain next to his dog tags.
___________________________

You talk trash about your "buddies" that aren't with you.

He knows he may not see some of his buddies again.
__________________________

You walk down the beach, staring at all the pretty girls.

He walks the streets, searching for insurgents and terrorists.
__________________________

You complain about how hot it is.

He wears his heavy gear, not daring to take off his helmet to wipe his brow.
__________________________

You go out to lunch, and complain because the restaurant got your order wrong.

He doesn't get to eat today.
__________________________

Your maid makes your bed and washes your clothes.

He wears the same things for weeks, but makes sure his weapons are clean.
__________________________

You go to the mall and get your hair redone.

He doesn't have time to brush his teeth today.
__________________________

You're angry because your class ran 5 minutes over.

He's told he will be held over an extra 2 months.
__________________________

You call your girlfriend and set a date for tonight.

He waits for the mail to see if there is a letter from home.
__________________________

You hug and kiss your girlfriend, like you do everyday.

He holds his letter close and smells his love's perfume.
__________________________

You roll your eyes as a baby cries.

He gets a letter with pictures of his new child, and wonders if they'll ever meet
__________________________

You criticize your government, and say that war never solves anything.

He sees the innocent tortured and killed by their own people and remembers why he is fighting.
__________________________

You hear the jokes about the war, and make fun of men like him.

He hears the gunfire, bombs and screams of the wounded.
__________________________

You see only what the media wants you to see.

He sees the broken bodies lying around him.
__________________________

You are asked to go to the store by your parents. You don't.

He does exactly what he is told.
__________________________

You stay at home and watch TV.

He takes whatever time he is given to call, write home, sleep, and eat.
__________________________

You crawl into your soft bed, with down pillows, and get comfortable.

He crawls under a tank for shade and a 5 minute nap, only to be woken by gunfire.
__________________________

You sit there and judge him, saying the world is probably a worse place because of men like him.

If only there were more men like him!

If you support your troops, re-send this to everyone you know,
If it gets to another veteran who hasn't received it yet, it will bring back memories.

Only two defining forces have ever offered to die for
you,

Jesus Christ and the American G. I

At least some of us realize that it is not the soldiers that are the problem. The soldiers do not decide to start a war, they are only following orders... regardless of whether they believe the war is justified or not. They have a job to do and they do it.

I have no beef with the soldiers doing their duty. My beef is with those at the top of the chain of command who are giving the orders to start the wars.

True, there were, and still are, some justifications for these wars. I still disagree with most of the reasons given for the Iraq war, but Afghanistan was a must, even though I did not see it that way at the time.

My goal has always been to try and get people to work for peaceful solutions first, but failing that, to keep trying to get people to see reason... on all sides of the issues.

I have never attacked or belittled the U.S. Military and I never will. Even if some soldiers do wrong, I know these are the exceptions and they do not represent all American soldiers. Most soldiers are good people. I was in the military for a time, fortunately for me, in peaceful times. I know first hand that the guys and gals in the service are real people, just like me and you. No one is perfect, some people are better than others, and some people are worse, but most people are not outright bad, and this goes for our soldiers too.

I sometimes will argue the other side of an issue but this does not mean I do not see our leader’s side of things too. I just want people to look at things from all sides, not just one side. This is how we keep our freedom... not lose it with a single minded focus that gets out of control. My disagreeing with our leaders should never be mistaken for disrespect of our soldiers.

I would never own or wear a shirt that belittles or does not support the troops.

That wasn’t aimed at you Mac, I understand your philosophy of exhausting all possible peaceful solutions first, and I agree with it. Sometimes however, in the end, military action is necessary; a lesser evil to stop a greater evil. The soldier fights and risks his life for his own freedoms, but also for the freedoms of those who disagree with his actions. Here is a passage from Heinlein that I recently came across,

"Anyone who clings to the historically untrue - and thoroughly immoral - doctrine that ‘violence never settles anything’ I would advise to conjure up the ghosts of Napoleon Bonaparte and the Duke of Wellington and let them debate it. The ghost of Hitler could referee, and the jury might well be the Dodo, the Great Auk, and the Passenger Pigeon. Violence, naked force, has settled more issues in history than has any other factor, and the contrary opinion is wishful thinking at its worst. Breeds that forget this basic truth have always paid for it with their lives and freedoms."

While the idea that ‘violence never settles anything’ is wrong, as history has proven, I don’t necessarily see it as immoral. His last line basically says that believing peace has settled more conflicts than force is ‘wishful thinking,’ but I don’t consider the idea that peaceful means can one day reverse that trend to be ‘wishful thinking," we just have to keep chipping away at ignorance and hatred. It sometimes seems like we are using stone tools to chip away at iron foundations but we still have to try, and believe that we will eventually succeed.

Well said. Of course, being the way I am, I found in MY life that the adage, 'Prepare for war, pray for peace' always worked out best for me. That and 'Turn the other cheek'. Of course, as a Human Being, I realize that we only HAVE two cheeks so when I run out of cheeks, it is time to stop turning! (yeah, I tend to be a bit on the LITERAL side, as you all know.
