Stay away from Norton 360 version 2 unless you like being aggravated by Internet Explorer freezing up on you every so often.

Norton 360 and certain web pages clash big time. It isn't just a problem with IE either; I have the same problem in Opera and Firefox as well. Norton 360, version 2, just sucks all the way around!

This problem has stopped my research dead at Ancestry.com a few different times now. The problem does not happen on every page but I will hang my browser on US Census pages and on some support pages. I thought I had solved the problem but this time the old fix isn’t working and I have not found a new fix yet.

I think it is just time to give up and uninstall Norton 360 v2 and either go back to Norton 360 v1, which did not cause any major problems but is less than a stellar program, or try another firewall program altogether.

Truthfully, I am getting rather sick and tired of Symantec products and their lousy customer support anyway. Maybe it is time to try another company.

Anyone have a suggestion for a company that does better firewall and utilities programs… and has at least a halfway intelligent customer support staff? I don’t care if they are friendly as long as they actually read my support questions and give relevant answers. It would also help if they know what the heck they are talking about.

Would you like an order of World Peace with that?

Unfortunately it seems that a majority of companies are running on reputation rather than results, doesn't seem to be a very clever long term plan. I guess when it gives you the room to absorb all the competition, it doesn't matter.

Yeah, a side order of world peace does sound good. How much longer will it take my order to arrive if I add that?

I have noticed that the fat old dogs keep getting fatter as they eat up all the smaller, friendlier, dogs. The fat dogs just keep getting fatter and fatter, and meaner, as all us cats keep getting that shaft stuck in further and further. Even worse, the over-stuffed dogs seem to be laughing with glee at our whimpering and complaints as we wither under the strain of their malice and malpractice.

No wonder the world is on the fast track straight to hell these days.

Anyway, my Norton 360 v2 situation was not improving so I had to dump it. It was a bit hard to give up on Norton after all this time, but when a product becomes more of a hindrance than a help then it is time to let it go, so I did.

I am now trying a similar McAfee product, and so far, I am not having any problems. I have no idea if McAfee is any better, or worse, at preventing snoops and hackers but at least I can do my research without massive inconvenience and lost time from hanging browsers.

Last night Symantec (Norton) support (or lack of) sent a courtesy e-mail asking if my problem had been solved. I told them, paraphrased, "Yes, now that I have removed your program from my machine, everything is working fine now."

Then I told them, "You are fired!"

That felt good.

Well, I sure hope the rest of my day goes better than this morning has, or for that matter, the last week.

This morning I was trying to get a used lancet (used to puncture the skin to bring out a small sample of blood for testing) out of the lancing device (a device that thrusts the lancet's sharp point into the skin to a precise depth) to install a fresh lancet but discovered that it was jammed into the lancing device too tightly. When my fingers slipped as the old lancet finally came lose the lancet went flying. After finding and recovering the old lancet I inserted a new lancet into the lancet device and was about to puncture my skin to get a fresh blood sample to test (for blood sugar levels) when I discovered that I had already punctured my finger when the old lancet came flying out of the lancing device. Well, I figured, since I was already stuck and bleeding I might as well take my blood sample and save the new lancet for next time.

Okay, so this was not a major bummer, as bummers go, but it was irritating and also came with an increased risk of infection from the accidental use of a used lancet. I guess I should be more careful about how tightly I jam those lancets into the lancing device.

Anyway, at least I did not break my morning eggs and everything was fine until I got back to my computer and discovered that my web host service had shut down my main web site.

Okay, by this point you may be asking yourself what does all this have to do with Norton 360?

Good question. As it turns out, although Norton has nothing to do with this morning's lancet problem, it has a lot to do with my main web site being shut down for a short time today.

I became aware of the problem on June 14th after I received a notice that one of my web hosting service payments had not gone through, the last payment, of three, for this month (I have three web domains and all three are charged for web hosting on different dates). I thought, that's odd, I wonder why the payment didn't go through. You see, I am very careful with my finances. Living on a fixed income I have to be very careful of my budget and my balances. I am rarely off by even a cent on my account balances in my checkbook. I make sure that everything I purchase is covered or can be covered before my account goes into overdraft. Since I knew everything should be fine, but also know that unexpected things can happen, I immediately checked my bank account... and found the problem.

Norton 360 had automatically renewed itself even though I had specifically unchecked that option in my account settings with Symantec (owners of Norton 360). In most cases, I disable automatic renewals because of the risks of overdraft charges, and I remember specifically turning off that option with Norton 360... well before I discontinued using that product! And yet, I was automatically charged for a product I am no longer using and this threw my balance off budget and caused two overdraft charges to my account before I found out what had happened.

Thanks a lot Norton... NOT!

After a few phone calls, and going through my bank's horrendous automated answering system, that has way too many menu items to choose from but not a number for the problem I was having, and endless loops and traps included, I finally was told that everything would be straightened out by Monday or Tuesday. Since the bank considered this a first time offense (like Norton’s mistake was my fault and automatically made me the offender), the overdraft charges were reversed.

Okay, but which is it, Monday or Tuesday, or will it take the bank, and Norton, even longer to get this problem solved, I wondered. You see, I was told by my web hosting service that it makes a difference. My web hosting service told me that their automated system would automatically make another attempt to collect payment on Tuesday... and there was nothing they could do to stop it. Well, I thought, that could be problem but there was nothing I could do but wait and see.

Well, as it turns out, my bank account problem was solved in time... but my web hosting service decided to shut my site down rather than let their automated system try again to collect payment. NOW, that made me mad. They told me one thing but did another! After checking to be sure, I did e-mail my web site hosts yesterday to tell them that my bank account was on schedule and the funds should be available on time… so this web site shut down really burns me up.

Anyway, no thanks to Norton, or my web hosting service, everything is in working order now. My account is where it should be, I am still pretty much broke but able to pay for my next EXPECTED charge.

Anyway, sometimes I just get tired of being kicked, repeatedly, by the powers that be.

No kidding!

It seems that as the world become evermore automated, more and more people are getting caught in the cogs and ground up... and then being charged for gumming up the works even if the fault was not theirs.
