Apparently SciFi has the four episodes that ABC threw away when they abruptly canceled the show. The series DVD even has the scripts for the final two episodes that didn't even make production, that would have completed the story.
I don't know if having this Carl Kolchak being the son of Darren McGavin's Carl Kolchak would have worked within the story. Their stories are the same, so their shared fates would be difficult to believe.
Incidentally, McGavin had an uncredited cameo in this series' pilot. He was a reporter in the newsroom. He died in February of this year, no doubt heartbroken over the cancellation of this incarnation.
I plan on picking up the DVD’s eventually. I think I need to get the original series DVDs too because it has been a very long time since I watched any of those episodes.
I did watch the original Night Stalker when it first came out but I am not sure I have even seen any of the shows in syndication or not. I do not remember enough of the original series to compare it fully with the new Night Stalker. I do no remember anything about Kolchak having a wife that was killed.
I did see a similarity between one of the new Night Stalker episodes with one of the originals though. In fact, the episode that Mira guest stared in. That episode was very similar to one I do remember seeing from the original series, and is also the show that gave me the idea that this could be the son of Carl Kolchak, 35 years after the original series where the son does indeed run into some of the same situations as his father did. But, if what you say is true, and the stories mirror the original series too closely, it would be hard to believe.
I still like this new Night Stalker regardless of whether it was a remake or a continuation. It is a shame it had such a short run.
