Okay, I just plugged in version 6 of the “No New Post” Plutoid icon. This version seems to work the best so far, but I had to increase the bright level so much that it washed out much of the original detail work. Oh well. At least I can use a full detail version in a possible future project.

I may make a couple alternate No New Post icons to see if I can get something that looks better. I have an idea for at least one alternative in mind right now. It depends on if I can create what I have in mind on such a small canvas though.

It may just be my poor morning eyesight but I have to agree that the Plutoids have very little detail, of course since they signify no new posts I guess it's appropriate.

While I was waiting for Comcast to drop by with a wireless router (which the first guy did not bring with him so I am now waiting for another tech to bring one) I decided to rework another few versions of the Plutoid.

The new version of the Plutoid is slightly changed and might be a little clearer, but I feel it is still not going to work well enough. And as you point out Quest, someone with poor vision (or has no idea what a cratered moon or planetoid looks like) is going to have a hard time trying to figure out what it's supposed to be in the first place.

When I find some time I may post one of the latest Plutoids as a temporary placeholder until I make a completely new icon to replace it.

Well, as I was typing this the second Comcast guy came by with my new wireless router, so I will now go ahead and set that up before I do anything else. Oh, wait, first I need to call Verizon and tell them, politely, where they can stick their DSL service. The Verizon DSL service itself was fine... but their tech support team should be fired and the entire Verizon tech support system should be thrown out and rebuilt from the ground up. I was so fed up with the Verizon tech support runaround the other day (and not for the first time) that today I am back with Comcast High-Speed Internet service.

If you get your e-mail address at Verizon disabled from lack of use, just try to get it working again. I dare you! I double dare you!! See where it gets you. I had been trying to get my Verizon e-mail address working, on and off, for the last year and a half or so, but it is still not working. I am done trying.

Well, I did not get that latest version of the Plutoid icon online yesterday. It took longer than expected to get all the kinks worked out of my new home network setup. The router I ordered through Comcast turned out to be an even bigger pain to get to work than the Verizon router was. Okay, maybe not that bad, but almost.

I hate the current trend of no printed documentation with products! Now, they often don’t even bother with quick installation guides. They, the manufacturers, do (sometimes) put the docs on the installation disk, but that is not all that handy. Worse, some of the instructions are often web based, so you have to have a working connection to get to the information about how to connect your equipment… lame! I finally did get the new router working though... after several hours of fighting with it.

Anyway, today, I just finished setting up my new home network… which is basically the same setup as before, just a bit faster now with the new hardware.

After a bit I will see about getting that new Plutoid icon online.

Okay, I have Plutoid version 8, of 9, posted now. I am still not happy with it so rather than work on it more; I will just start on something else within the next couple of days.

I also touched up the ship a little more but I see that it still needs another touch up. Overall, I like how the ship turned out though.

The new "No New Post" ship icon is meant to be a temporary fix.

I have not found the time to make that other No New Post icon I had in mind yet, but I may start work on that soon. That idea may not work anyway, it might require a larger canvas size than is currently allotted for that space. Although I could post a larger icon in that spot, it would mess with the current board layout. I want to avoid that, at least for now.

I might also see about making a better version of that plutoid icon. I do want to make one of those that look better but it will take a bit more time for me to get that one perfected.

I am also still adjusting the "New Post" Ship. I feel it is getting closer, but it still needs a little more work.

Today I made and tested a few new versions of the Mini-Verse² board logo.

I kind of miss the old logo but I want to play around with a few ideas over the next few weeks that make a smaller board banner more practical. As always, I do not know how long these pixel-painting projects will take, but I do have a couple somethings in mind to work on.

My idea for the new "No New Posts" icon has been redirected. That icon idea morphed into an idea for a different project (related to the above paragraph) that I still have not started work on yet. This leaves me still thinking about what to make for the “No New Posts” icon. I am open to suggestions.

Just an update.

I changed the board colors yesterday. I may try another color theme before too long, but for now, the board has turned blue.

Yesterday I started work on a new detail rich art project for the board. This is a rather involved project so it may take several additional days of work before it is ready to display. The new image is too big to be an icon but it is still a relatively small object, being about the size of one of this board's avatars. As stated before, small object make detail work a challenge, but I think the project is progressing well, so far. Once this new art project is posted it will definitely be noticeable. What is it? Ya all will just have to wait and see.

I have another project in mind too. The project I am working on now may need a companion piece to balance the board design. Thus, I may need a second art project done before I post my current project.

How long will it take me to get these two art projects ready to post? I cannot say for sure, but it may be a week or two. Maybe less if miscellaneous life chores and events do not demand too much of my time.

Stay tuned... better yet, join in and speculate. This board could use a bit of action to liven things up. New people are welcome to join the board and old members are always welcome back. Where the heck did everyone go anyway?

Over the next few days, I plan to work on graphics for the board. Now that I have adjusted the board's color theme (skin), and done about as much as I can with the newly upgraded board's design (and still waiting for the board hosts to solve the few remaining problems), it's time to get started on new graphics for the board and update some of the old icons.

I have already posted a few new graphic elements (did anyone even notice?) to the board but most of these are used as design elements rather than as icons or scenery.

A note on the two animations that are now showing on the board, one of these animations, the New Post Ship, works properly in Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Opera (the only three browsers I currently test for), but the other animation only works properly in Internet Explorer. For those who use Firefox or Opera, you are not missing much. The little UFO did not work out as well as I had hoped for anyway. It is just too small for the animated element of the image to work well. A larger UFO, that I started working on several years ago, but never finished, works better as an animation. I may add that larger UFO to my list of things to finish and post sometime soon.

In addition to the larger UFO, I have one more animation in the works. I am not yet ready to say what that project is.

Stay tuned (all one of you).

After I get this board redesign finished, I am definitely going to have to start looking for a batch of new friends.

Well, this board has pretty much died, as has my other board... that was meant to replace this old board. Still, I am reluctant to give up on this board, or my new one. However, due to yet another one of this board's website host design changes, that effected how some style elements look and work (changes that clashed with my custom style work for this board), I decided to dump most of my custom work and temporarily use one of the canned skins that my board host's offer.

At this point, I am not sure when, or if, I will get to work on a new custom look for this board. It depends on whether or not there is anyone interested in reviving this board and making it worth my time and effort to save it.

New people are welcome... as are all my old friends.

After more thought, I decided that two boards is just too much work.

I still have a lot of work to do on the design and layout of the new board, and several other projects that eat mass hours of my time. I have no spare time to get back to work on this old board.

I really hate to give up on this old board, but it is time to let it go.

You can find the new board at http://macjr.com/mybb/

I will now lock this board so that this will be the final post here.

I started this message board back in 2005, but became unhappy with Websitetoolbox.com abruptly changing their template designs for their boards. That had caused the ruination of my customizations to this board, and then after I re-customized this board, they did it again, changed their templates in ways that messed up my customization work. At that point, I had had more than enough, so I started my second board with open source software that I have complete control over, right down to the MySQL and php level.

The second MACJR'S Mini-Verse² Forum was born in 2009, and the software I chose for that new board got me started, but I found it a bit lacking in some ways. phpBB is excellent software, but it did not suit my preferences as well as I would have liked, so I started the third board back in 2011.

It took me two years, due to one delay after another, to finish (although finish is the wrong word, because there are always more things I can do) my custom design of the latest version of the MACJR'S Mini-Verse² Forums. I am pleased with how well my new board is looking now. I am using MyBB for my latest board. It is the best open source forum software that I have tried so far. It is highly customizable, and I am about ready to start work on a second, more advanced, theme for that board.

You can find my latest board at http://macjr.com/mybb/

About this message board, I have decided to unlock this board and maybe tinker around with it from time to time. I would prefer people join my newest message board, but this board is now open again. You are free to join here at this board, if you want to.

The theme for this message board just does not take customizations well. Not very well at all. There are too many limitations, and what I can change, if I change them, it tends to mess up the board theme elements that I am not allowed to change.

I refuse to work this way. This board is just stuck with this canned theme.

If Websitetoolbox.com ever wants me back as a paying customer, they are going to have to offer me better than this!

Okay, maybe I was a little rough on Website Toolbox last time. I just get so frustrated when I am only allowed access to the style sheets, when there are things that I want to adjust down at a deeper level.

Still, a person can do a lot just with style sheets, and I may try again to see what kind of changes I can get away with to these blasted canned themes that Website Toolbox offers.

I do not want a canned look. I want to make my own board themes. Thank you.

Just a note about today’s activities, I changed to a different canned board theme, from the glossy black to this wooden brown theme, and then tried a few adjustments here and there. I am done playing for the day, at this site, and I left things a bit unpolished here. I may come back and fix the rough places soon, or I might just dump today's work and try something else, but I will be back here sooner or later.

For now, it is back to work on my main board, located elsewhere on the web.  [wink]
