Well, it seems to be that time of year again - the weather is getting nicer and I start paying more attention to my activities.  It always just seems so much harder to stay active in the winter.  My schedule is usually fuller and the early darkness always just seems to make me feel tired the moment I finish dinner. I am DEFINITELY not one of those morning people that jump up at the crack of dawn to get their workout in early.

Anyway, I thought I would throw this thread up to see what ideas anyone has for getting in shape this year.  Any new activities?  Any healthy recepies you want to share?

I got my first walk in at lunch today.  It is still a little chilly out but it wasn't TOO bad once you got going.  Hopefully the weather will stay nice to I can get back into that daily routine.

I have been putting in mass hours sitting here in this office chair these last couple of weeks and have noticed that my waistline has been expanding a bit lately.

I have been trying to remember to do mini-workouts every so often. The last one I did, a couple days ago, made me a little bit sore. This tells me I need to do these mini-workouts a lot more often and then expand them to full-fledged workouts.

As they say, and as it is, it is the getting into a workout routine that is the hard part. It is so much easier just to give in to the desire to keep working on graphics, xhtml, and css... or whatever projects I am into at any given time.

Anyway, working with graphics and code all day is not conducive of toned muscles and weight loss, so I do need to get started on regular workout routines.

I am trying to condition myself, physically and mentally, for this now.

Well, at least I did get in another mini-workout right after I made that previous post.

I plan to start working with light weights soon, then work my way back up to my heavier iron plates. That will take a while though, I was pretty buff there for a while but have lost much of that over the last couple of years.

Yesterday I added weights to my mini-workouts. My laterals (the muscles under the armpits to each side of the chest) are a little sore today, but not too bad. My chest, back, biceps and triceps all handled the weights with no pain today. It was just a light introduction to the 11lb weights (beginner lightweight stuff for me) though.

In this computer age, my laterals seem to be the muscles I use the least when I am not working out regularly, so they are always among the first muscles to start complaining when I start working out again.

It should not take much longer to get back to full workouts now... as long as I do keep at this.

Two days in a row and I haven't done anything.... not necessarily by choice.  The last time I was shoveling, I kicked the shovel the one time to get the packed snow off of it.  At the time, it hurt and I knew I must have kicked it wrong somehow.... but didn't think much more about it.  It still hurt SLIGHTLY different ways I would move it or step on it but nothing major.  The last two days, though, it has really been hurting.  It seems like my new routine exacerbates the pain.  Pity, too because I finally felt like I was making headway again.  I thought maybe it would be best to rest it a bit and then try getting back into it more slowly.

Sorry to hear about your foot NJ. If the pain lingers too long you should get it looked at.

So far, my health is still stable (no new aches and pains to add to the list, that is) but I have had to do some running around to get a few things done. I still managed to get in another mini-workout yesterday but without weights. I am planning to do a workout with weights tomorrow and hope that I actually get around to doing it.

When I was into a regular schedule of working out I would alternate between workouts with weights and workouts without weights. I am hoping to get back into that system but I need to take it slow. The last few times I started working out regularly I think I pushed ahead a little too fast, which may have been what triggered health problems that ended the workout each time. I am hoping that taking it slower this time will get me in better shape and avoid more health problems. I just have to face the fact that I am getting older and can’t just jump straight into strenuous workout routines anymore.

I am not all the way there yet, but I have improved since my last post on this thread.

You are welcome to come on over to the new board and give me workout tips there.
