Death comes to us all, but great achievements
build a monument which shall endure
until the sun grows cold
- Ralph Waldo Emerson

This week we said our final goodbyes to Frederick Dewitt Turnbull II, mentor, friend, and my honorary grandfather.

He was interred at Arlington National Cemetery with full honors. Sadly his wife, Helen, was unable to attend, having suffered a stroke just days before. Helen was able to listen to the service, music, and twenty one gun salute via cell phone. It was the only time she has exhibited any voluntary movement since the stroke.

Helen will no doubt join her love of the last sixty years shortly.

Fred was a man for whom words do not suffice. Spectacular, incredible, heroic, loving, none of these mere words can describe the depth with which he embodied their meanings. Among the many things he taught me is that true heroes are people who follow their beliefs without forcing them on others.

Fred's three children couldn't be more different from each other and him if they tried, and while they have had varied measures of success in their endeavors, Fred loved them each unconditionally. In his eyes, they were each ultimately successful in following their own paths.

I do not believe I ever saw Fred express anger. He never spoke of his accomplishments, they spoke for themselves. He never stopped serving his country and his beliefs. Long after the point where most men (including himself) retire, I would find evidence that Fred had been out in the real world making a difference.

Our world is less without him, and our future dim without men like him.

I am sorry to hear about your loss Blake.

I can't seem to find anything creative to say right now so I will just offer myself if you need someone to talk with.

I am around.

Best regards,

Michael

Blake, I never quite know what to say on these posts... but please know that you, and Fred's family are all in my prayers and thoughts.

Some people make this world a much better place.  It sounds like he was one of them.  All we can do is try to live our lives in a way that honors their memory and would make them proud of us.

Hugs, dear.

Blake, you express very well how you felt about this man, your honorary grandfather. He had to be someone special to move you to such eloquent words.

I too will keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers.

Thank you all for your kind words.

Helen joined Fred last week. She never communicated after the funeral.
