Dream Workshop is an electronic Morpheus

The details are appropriately sketchy, but Japanese company Takara claims they've invented a gadget that can control — or at least influence — your dreams. Supposedly, you stare at a picture of what you want to dream about (say, the Bahamas), and by using voice, lights, music, and aromas to stimulate your senses, the Dream Workshop can have you drinking Pina Coladas on the beach without ever ponying up plane fare. Sounds great on paper, and the company says it's experienced partial success, but sometimes the dream machine gets the right theme with the wrong storyline (sharks in the water, anyone?). Once it's perfected, how about a dream recorder next?

I wonder how much this little gizmo will cost?  I wonder what the success rate is....

I wonder how many commercials your dreams will come with when you use this dream machine?

I am sure that in time, as the dream machines technology improves, they will find all kinds of ways to make you want this brand or that... or worse, this leader over that one, or to change your mind about what is right and what is wrong.

And here I thought how some use TV to manipulate people is bad. This dream technology could lead to a situation many times worse. Imagine if there are no restrictions to stop the greedy, the power hungry, and the manipulative sort from controlling your dreams, and secretly, your thoughts.

As the "Stargate" episode "Absolute Power" says, "Dreams Teach" Shifu meant it in a possitive way.... HOPEFULLY that would be true.

It could get bad though.

For now it sounds like it just mimmics the atmosphere of a place, not be able to create actual situations, but who knows...

And you a5re SO right about inserting commercials!  If they find a way to make money on it they will.

Does anyone remember "Blipverts" from "Max Headroom?"  I think B5 also had an episode about similar subliminal messages... orwas that an outright commercial about the psycorps... or there was a meeage inside the commercial....?  Something like that, anyway.

A dream machine like that would be alright if there was a way to fast forward any adverts that interrupted a nice dream.

Oh yes, one moment I'm in the pool with Christie Brinkley, then suddenly I'm playing pool with David Brinkley.

Blipverts, NannyJo? When your starting point is messing with the subconscious, you're already standing on the line, you just need to lean to cross it.

Blipverts were the condensed, intense, subliminal commercials that the television station of the future inserted in their programs.  They were designed to be so compressed that they wouldn't give the viewers time to change the channel.

Unfortunately they had a way of accumulating and UN(de?)compressing once inside the viewers brains and some peoples' minds kind of blew up.

... oops.

Like you said, Blake, you never know what happens wen you mess with people's minds.   There is SO much that we don't know about how minds work.. who knows what yu are throwing off.

GREAT! Not only would I have the chance for a machine rather than a book suggest dreams to my mind, eventually, they'll want to record them? LOL, do they refund if those dreams turn to NIGHTMARES!?!?!?!?

No matter what I have tried in the past, ALL of my dreams start off nice and peaceful, but then someone or something in the background always comes up with a gun/knife/sword/flamethrower/axe or (my most recent favorite) becomes some sort of gun wielding VAMPIRE (as if being a blood sucker wasn't bad enough) and always comes after me, my wife, my friends, even my DOG!!! LOL, and of course, I ALWAYS run out of bullets at just the right moments. I already have a hard time sleeping, now I can actually have something giving my subconscious even MORE ammo?!?!?! Nah, gimme Steven King any day! Alright, actually, my wife forbade me years ago to read OR watch ANY bad things within three hours of going to bed, hasn't helped but. . . .

I don't know how to make myself lucid dream anytime I want like Cyb says, but once I begin to dream I can than decide what to dream about, where to go, what to do.

It just takes practice to start out. First you have to learn to be aware of when you are dreaming. Once you get into the practice of knowing when you are dreaming than you can begin to practice bringing into your dream the things you want to dream about, then you just kind of build the rest of the dream around it. That's how it works for me anyway. Just experiment with it, it's fun.

You know, I'm not tryiong to tempt fate here or anything, butI have never had a nightmare.... or at least none that I remember.  I've have a few "intense" dreams... adventurous/dangerous type dreams that are exciting, but nothing that I would classify as a nightmare.

Maybe I do a form of lucid dreaming without even trying when I sleep.  If everything works out in my dreams maybe I do control them more than some.... that or I am channeling Walt Disney when I sleep.

No, you are not tempting fate, as it were, I am just strange! Like cybnetic and Kirock, I can control MOST of where my dream start to go. But lately, it seems I have really lost control as to how it ends. Though I must admit, haven't had to be awakened lately.

Ont that note, I once took anti-depressant meds (at my wife's request, I was NOT depressed) and let me tell you; I was MORE depressed when I lost sleep due to being afraid to close my eyes! Sheesh, them 'anti-depressant' pills should be renamed, 'Don't close your eyes' pills! Now those 'dreams' really had me scared and I was continually screaming myself awake when my wife didn't wake me fast enough! But no worries, THAT was several YEARS ago!

Sometimes I notice being aware while dreaming, but not for long.  For a few years now Ive been keeping a dream diary to record everything I remember when I wake up but I never seem to be able to control my dreams (yet anyway)
