We all had to attend a "Diversity in the Workplace Seminar" today.  It was strange and we really weren't sure why it popped up all of a sudden on everyone's calandars just this week. Usually these type of things are announce weeks ahead of time and offered at various days and times so that everyone had a chance to get there.  THIS one was only announced Tuesday and we were assigned a time to go TODAY.

Apparently time was of the essence in this case.  It seems Karl, who works in another department,  is going to be Carla by the middle of January.  They needed us to be ready to see some changes.

I still have mixed feelings about the meeting.  I wonder if this big "gathereing" was making more a spectical out of the process than was needed.  It seems to be one of those deals where people will either accept it or not.... those that WOULD accept it listened and were attentive during the talk... those who won't weren't going to have their minds chanced by a company mandated class.

I'm not sure that I would have had a better way to "let the masses know"  It seems the big thing was justr letting people know so that they weren't surprised when they see Carla in the lady's room.

Personally I think I would have been embarrased if I were Karl; NOT by the decision,  just by the fact that 200 people were dragged through my personal business forced into listening about my personal life because the company said so.

Anyway it was an interesting Friday afternoon....

....and that GOODNESS it is Friday!!!

Well, I guess that is a way to get into the Lady's Room without the risk of getting arrested. Seems kind of extreme to me... but each to their own... or lack thereof.

But seriously now, perhaps it would be a good idea to at least inform Karl's department, especially any and all ladies who might find that Karl, dressed in drag, just came out of the stall next to the one they were in.

    Not sure I understand; Are you saying that Karl will be dressing in drag UNTIL the change, or that Carla will start working there early next year and that, in fact, it will really be Karl but with different, uhh, pipes?

     We have an electrician at our store, actually, she works for the whole building, her name is 'Maria'. Now, BEFORE we took over this place, we were told that 'Maria' had just had a sex change operation to become a woman. No big, she is in her late 40s to mid 50s, and, in MY eye, she looks kinda like Dorthy from Golden Girls. But, she is a very good electrician! I watched her install a chandelier for us, WITH HER LONG AND PAINTED NAILS! It made no difference to her, so why wold it make a difference to me? She was cheap AND good, that's all I cared about!

    Perhaps, IF Karl was not that great an employee OR if Carl had had a few dates he would have to break, then I can kinda see a reason for this announcement. If Karl is in the Steel Workers union, MAYBE then I could see a need for the announcement, if Karl was the President of the then, o.k., make the announcement. Otherwise, let her have her dang privacy!!!

I have to agree, unless of course Karl okayed the meeting. Personally I would imagine that those who really need to know, those in the affected department, probably already knew what is going to happen. Why drag everyone else into it?

This is classic CYA.

When Carla shows up at work, should anyone be offended (and possess what Carla threw away), they are being reminded that should they exercise their First Amendment rights the company will be backing Carla. More importantly, Carla cannot sue the company because they have told everyone to get along and play nice.

The trans-gender people that I have known just wanted to fit in. They felt they didn't in the sex they were born. They certainly didn't want attention drawn to them. It's about who they are, not who they were.

Now everyone will be thinking about Karl when they see Carla. Precisely the opposite of what Carla is seeking.

Some people feel they were born in the wrong body.  Few get a chance to do anything about it.  I guess I could see the courtesy in notifying coworkers of a change like this but to have a 'mandatory' meeting to announce it...... well that just puts a lot of pressure on people.  Sure this is life-altering but it's still a choice.  Perhaps this type of announcement would have been more appropriate if someone was having radical surgery to remove a limb or something.  This is not something we would consider much of a choice but usually a necessary step to sustain life.  If a 50 year-old man decided to get a facelift would he feel the need to 'inform' everyone prior to the event?

Our society has gone overboard with being politically correct.  Unfortunately there is no protocol for the politically correctness in many situations today.  I think I liked it better when it was just considered CYA...... but of course that term is no longer politically correct.

It makes you wonder what Karl….. er….. Carla’s first trip to the “Ladies Room” will be like at work.  This is not an experience that’s easily translated to someone who’s been a male all their life.  And you have to consider half the world’s problems are solved in the Ladies Room.

       You just underlined the whole problem in this country - POLITICAL CORRECTNESS!!!

<small rant to follow>

     PC is THE reason this country actually got weaker; people are afraid to say how they FEEL and instead, just hide it underneath where it will continue to get worse and worse. PC is another way of controlling what people are thinking, but not really, it just makes things hide until they can no longer be hidden! And then we have things like Columbine, The DC Snipers, Iraq, the reactions to 9/11, the rise in violent crimes, the rise in racially motivated crimes, the depression that seems to have gotten worse over the years.

     Need I continue? I think we all know what I am saying and where I am going. PC is probably the MOST destructive force this country, no, this WORLD has EVER seen since the invention and use of the ATOMIC BOMB!!! Am I sounding a bit <cRaZy>? Sure, crazy to think that people will actually change because I did NOT tell them what I felt about them or what they were/are doing! That is NOT how to make the world a better place! You make things better by facing them head on, and being truthful REGARDLESS of how it makes one feel at that moment! Think of it like a disease; IF you let the illness alone, hoping it will go away on its own; you will be dead or majorly crippled within a short time, if you take the necessary steps, the meds, the surgeries, etc. chances are you will survive it and be healthier in the end. Sure, MOST of those treatments do NOT feel great, and some even feel worse than the disease itself, is that any reason to leave the disease alone to ravage your body? No, it most definitely is not!

     I believe, and I have said this before, that NOT telling the WHOLE truth is just as bad a LYING! Being 'PC' is just another way of dressing up a LIE in 'PRETTY CLOTHES'. It might look better, but in the end; it is still a LIE!!

<end rant>

Well if it's a rant you want I'll be glad to jump on the band wagon.  This one is about Christmas.

It was different 2 years ago with around 35 people at the workplace.  We put up a Christmas tree and decorated in a festive way.  The snag: we had one Jewish lady among us.  No problem, we just provided Hanukkah items for her.  All were happy.

Today is a little different.  We have close to the same number of people but I am the only one who was there 2 years ago.  I realize you have to be careful at Christmas as to not offend anyone but again, have we gone overboard?  It is Christmas after all but there can be no religious reflections of this joyous event.  Have we forgotten this was the day Christ was born?  Hence the name: Christmas.

Needless to say I am challenged when it comes to decorating the office.  So I display snowmen (or snow people to be PC) and snowflakes or other nonspecific decorations of the season.

To me, a Christmas tree is very specific to the occasion.  Yet we are not able to display such an expression.  One lady actually went around to EVERYONE in the office and asked if they would be offended if we put up a Christmas tree.  She even got everyone to sign a document consenting to this.  Although the consensus with having a tree was okay with everyone, it was still decided that it wouldn't be appropriate.  Why?  We work for the state.

So we were told we could decorate our cubicle any way we like.  There is an array of Yuletide offerings displayed proudly in the individual cubicles, ranging from manger scenes to Santa Claus.  I’ve almost decided to place a 6’ Christmas tree atop my monitor in MY cubicle.  The festive display would then stick out about 4’ above the walls of my cube.  My cube will also display festive garland and lights and I may insert my CD of Trans-Siberian Orchestra Greatest Christmas Songs.

So it’s not politically correct to display significant Christmas symbols.  It’s not politically correct to display religious references.  I’m sorry but this IS A RELIGIOUS HOLIDAY!!  So if they’re going to tease us by allowing this holiday into our work schedule, then why can’t we display it as it was meant to be?  We can display “Happy Holidays” but not “Merry Christmas”.  The workplace is taking the joy out of Christmas.

Christmas is Christmas so when I say “Merry Christmas” to you, please don’t be offended.  And the fact that I have to ask for YOUR forgiveness for something I believe in is just plain ridiculous.  Did the Jewish lady ask if I’d be offended with her Hanukkah display?  Of course not.  But the traditions that have been in place for centuries are now being dissected.  Why can’t everyone be free to express their own beliefs without ridicule from others?  What happened to freedom of expression, freedom of religion, the freedom to display what we believe in without feeling we’ll be attacked for our beliefs?

And that being said……. if they commercialize Christmas any more I think I’ll scream!!!  Have they totally forgotten the true meaning of Christmas?  BUY! BUY! BUY! BUY!  That’s not what Christmas is about.  We go into hock for this one event of the year and spend a majority of the following year paying for it.  In June of the following year you’re still reminiscing about the past Christmas because you’re still paying for it!  We should be remembering the “time”, not the “things” we gave or received.  This day is not named Shopmas but was appropriately named for Christ.

So don’t let the advertisers and Scrooges of your workplace get you down.  Keep Christmas, the true meaning of Christmas, in your heart.  That way no one can take it away from you.
