Yes, it is finally happening! My wife, Francesca & her mom are opening a store of their own!

Located in beautiful Carmel by the Sea, Lily's Chance Discoveries will sell items of Art, Statues, Jewelry, Plants, Books, cards (NOT playing cards, NJ), Antiques, and furniture!

And, unlike many stores in Carmel (or on the peninsula for that matter), the prices will NOT reflect a 'money hungry, gouge EVERYONE that walks through the door' attitude! It will be run with a level of ethics rarely seen in this country today!

That said, if ANY of you happen to find yourself in Carmel, please look us up! By the way, there will be wireless access, so you will be able to keep track of whatever you have a need to keep track of!

Anyway, the lease will be signed tomorrow (Oct 11) and the carpets will be installed soon thereafter! The dry wall has been installed and the FIRST moths items have already been procured!

Also, do any of you know how to set up an on-line shopping link that we might use for the store? We are also looking to set up a website and are willing to pay (of course). I would prefer to deal with someone I know already (and it feels better to give' the money to someone I know versus a stranger! Let me know and I will get you the info you need. Let us discuss it. My email is liked to my name!

By the way: Not sure if that last paragraph is allowed, but I REALLY want to work with people I know and didn't know how else to let you all know!

And yes, Walt, this post is allowed because you are a well established board member who is not here just to self-promote. That makes a difference.

I will delete SPAM, and the SPAMMER, if they show up but I will not delete a friend's successes and achievements or requests for help.

I will be happy to consult you on your online web site needs Walt, but there is just too much work for one me to do in a timely fashion to offer to build your site. It takes me ages to update my own web sites.

However, if you need custom graphics, logos, page designs, and such, and are not in a huge hurry, I might be talked into helping.

Congratulations to the "Cesca" part of Walt's name!  All the best of luck to you.   I LOVE stores like that!  - even if you don't have playing cards    I wish I could be there to check it out in person.

I hope that you do get the site up and running Walt... I may be your first customer.

Have FUN!

When you are ready, send me some of your ideas for the business site.

The first things to do after that is get a domain and hosting service. Then make a splash page to grab your space on the web.

Then, after that, we take it one step at a time.

Well, we have finally obtained the final loan we wanted to keep the store going strong!!!! And, in case I haven't said, the NEW opening date is Nov. 15th!!!

By the way, our local bank, the one that claims to be friendly towards small business owners? The one that will remain nameless (Monterey County Bank) with it's many commercials talking about how much they 'care' about the small business owner? Yeah, THOSE guys!! Do you know that when my wife & her mother went in to ask for a loan, with ALL the pertinent paperwork filled out and ALL of the projections for the next three years (which, by the way, we worked our collective ARSES off!) AND THE WOMAN LOAN PERSON BARELY LOOKED AT ANY OF IT (no lie, she took less than 30 seconds to 'glance' through 20 pages of text and charts) and without even pausing on the page that laid out how much we projected to make in each year (and how profitable we were projecting), she looked up and said, 'I'm sorry, we do NOT make loans of less than $100K PLUS a $10K loan processing fee PLUS 11% interest rate on the loan! Image

Dang! WTF do we need $100k for?Image All we wanted was a measly $30k because that was what we budgeted we would need to get us through the first year IF times were bad (which they won't be)!!!! And they claim to be friendly towards small businesses? Who the frack do they think they are? The Mob? Even they aren't that bad! And this is legal because . . . ?

Anyway, God looks out for his own, after getting THAT 'bad' news, we actually procured a BETTER deal for EXACTLY the amount we wanted WITHOUT that silly $10k processing fee AND a much lower interest rate! And get this; we are now also waiting for a grant approval to come in sometime in the next three months (again, right in the middle of that famous 'slow period'!)

See, isn't God the GREATEST?!?! I praise HIS name whenever I think of Him ad what HE has done in my life! I may not always know what HE is doing, but with EVERY good thing that has happened, every perceived bad thing that has happened, I see his handiwork all over it! Praise God, for HE is always right, regardless of how I might feel about what is happening, HE always comes through in HIS own way. I am not foolish enough to believe that HIS way and mine are always compatible; I cannot see the forest for the trees, but when I look back over my life, I see where HE has been leading me (sometime pulling me, sometimes pushing me) and I cannot believe how stubborn I was and am and (probably) will be!

Well, I am done for now, just know this; God IS real and there is absolutely no doubt of that fact in y heart and in my mind! I know and accept that Jesus died on the cross for my sins so that I would have life everlasting in Heaven and not spend eternity in the Lake of Fire that is Hell. Amen

Walter

Congratulations again Walt.

As I was reading your post I could not help but think that the first paragraph did belong in this thread but that the middle three paragraphs belonged in the “Viewpoints” forum (I have a beef with how banks do business too), and the final two paragraphs belonged in the “Religion” forum. That was a multitalented post.

Anyway, may your family business be successful and provide you with all that you and your family hope and dream for.

Update: Lily's Chance Discoveries will now be 'officially' opened on November 18th!!!!

The carpets will go in on the 15th, the ceiling has been installed (actually, it is a faux ceiling, covering the original), the phone lines are active, no phone or fax put in, but the LINES work! The credit card machine should be put in next week (although, could have sworn that my wife did not want to use credit cards. Well, what do I know, I'm JUST the husband), and the alarm system should also be activated next week (which alarm, we don't know, BOTH companies we have contacted seem to have trouble returning calls, guess they do not want our business. No worries, it will all happen in its time and not before)

Meanwhile, even though we did not hit the first of Nov., like I wanted, not the 15th like I wanted; we won't miss the 'real' shopping frenzy of Christmas, that month AFTER Thanksgiving. Nor will we miss that OTHER great shopping week - the AT&T Pro/Am Golf tourney!

Then we have Valentines day (ladies, do you give antiques for Valentines Day? Doesn't matter, we also sale art and cards), St. Patrick's Day, Mother's Day, Father's Day, Groundhog day (lolol), etc. and around and around the tourist season go!

Pray for us, as we pray for you (and us).

Anychance any of the items will be available on the internet?  Will there be a website (hint hint hint.....) ?

Sounds like everything is finally coming together Walt.  Good luck on that final week of nail-biting preparation.  And what perfect timing for the Grand Opening, one week before Thanksgiving and just in time for the biggest shopping day of the year, the day after Thanksgiving!

It's good your wife decided to get a credit card machine since that will be a good portion of your business.  Most people don't carry that much cash on them these days.  The approval is quick and easy (and it beats the heck outta chasing down hot checks).  And it's the way to go if you're expecting a lot of business from tourists.

Gee if you're having that much trouble getting a response from the security companies, it kinda makes you wonder how their response time would be once in place.

It’s probably a good thing your antique shop is all the way down there in CA, otherwise my mother would probably go broke in there after about every paycheck.

And yes, I agree with Chevy, being able to accept cards is a must in any business today. Most people use them more often than cash… for example, me. I seldom carry cash anymore.

Hmm, you have to wonder if maybe the security company is already too busy, that would not be good either. Have you talked with the local businesses in the area of your shop to find out what the crime rate is there?

You could always sign up with “It Takes a Thief” and see about getting a total security makeover… the only problem is that you have to let them rob and trash your place first.

Well, to be honest; this area has VERY little crime, so little that the local police logs are often reprinted in the papers of large cities and talked about on Lay Leno to show what an 'odd' crime rate we have out here! Like, the PD was called because someone had stolen a mans pot of stew, off the stove and out of his home! The responding police found said pot... on the table where it had been put to cool off!

Seriously though; we do have 'real' crime here, the jewelry stores get the 'smash & grab' type of crimes and there is a ring of jewel thieves that lie in wait for the jewelry guys delivering the jewels! WE WILL only be carrying 'homemade' jewelry, the kind with NO diamonds, so we are not too worried on that aspect.

That said, our insurance company kinda demands that we have a security company or they will NOT cover us.
